About SmartLearning
SmartLearning is an educational institution that has existed for 30 years with a focus on online education and teaching. Here you have the opportunity to supplement your educational background with subjects that you do not have the opportunity to access at your physical educational institution. The institution is owned by all eight business academies in Denmark. As all SmartLearning’s courses are 100 percent online, everyone, regardless of where they live in the country, can participate in the teaching of the individual courses.
SmartLearning offers 150 different online courses such as IT, management, sales and marketing, and transportation and logistics. The institution consists of coordinators who also act as teachers and other teachers affiliated with the business academies. In addition, SmartLearning has employees who act as digital learning consultants who ensure that the institution’s offer is uniform for all students.
Today’s profile Jakob Hornbeck
One of SmartLearning’s employees who acts as both coordinator and lecturer is Jakob Hornbeck. Among other things, he teaches sales and marketing. In addition, he has a coordinator function at the institution, where his role is to be responsible for a number of the programs at SmartLearning. He has been in the business academy sector for 16 years, where he has taught various programs both physically and online, but for the past three years he has been 100 percent online at SmartLearning.
As a lecturer, Jakob has extensive experience with video and online teaching. In addition to teaching online, he has various smaller video projects running on microlearning, where professionals are brought in.
Three ways to use educational videos
1) Theory videos
2) Video feedback
3) Video of the week
As a teacher at SmartLearning, Jakob basically has three ways of using video:
1) Theory videos
Videos where he explains a theory or model related to the subject. The videos last between 3 to 10 minutes depending on the model and target audience. He also creates a script and finds graphics to accompany the videos.
2) Video feedback
Instead of sending written feedback to his students’ assignments, Jakob provides feedback through videos. The videos are recorded as a screen recording where he shows the student’s assignment and highlights criticism points. The student can also see Jakob while he is giving feedback. Students have expressed their appreciation for this type of feedback as they get a higher quality than written feedback.
3) Video of the week
SmartLearning courses are structured in such a way that there are 14 themes in the course, which are distributed over a 14-week period. For each theme, the teacher creates a framing video where the teacher presents the theme that sets the tone for the week’s teaching. It is important that the videos look good and that the message is clear, as the students do not meet their teachers in person. Students should be able to engage with the week’s theme without having to contact the teacher for explanations.
Videos create a form of relationship
In addition to the three types of videos, SmartLearning teachers also create presentation videos for each new course, where they introduce themselves and the course. This is to create a kind of relationship between the teacher and the students, as all teaching is online. Jakob also mentions that the students also prefer to see the teachers in a video rather than having to watch a YouTube video, as a video with the teacher creates a better sense of belonging.
Watch Jakob talk about SmartLearning’s three types of educational videos and how it creates a relationship between student and teacher:
Students emphasize the flexibility
Busy everyday life
The majority of SmartLearning’s students have busy lives, either with full-time jobs, multiple children or both. They want to take a flexible continuing education program where they can upskill and get their skills certified. One way to provide flexible continuing education for SmartLearning is to have all classes online. Students don’t have to spend half an hour on transportation or be present at a specific time.
Self-schedule 95% of the time
When learning takes place in real-time, SmartLearning records it and publishes it on-demand. By saving travel time coupled with online on-demand videos, this flexibility often comes into play when students evaluate a course. According to Jakob, they can schedule themselves 95% of the time and educate themselves when it fits into their lives.
Watch Jakob talk about the results of having flexible online learning with on-demand videos:
Creates structure on folders in the video library
The coordinator Jakob
SmartLearning uses the video solution Panopto to manage their video content. Panopto is an all-in-one video solution where you can securely record, edit, host and publish your videos. Jakob spends most of his time in Panopto structuring folders with the different courses in SmartLearning’s video library. In the courses, he creates folders with the three aforementioned types of videos: 1) Theory videos, 2) Video feedback and 3) Video of the week.
The Panopto video solution in interaction with the LMS Moodle
Panopto’s Moodle integration brings video directly into the Moodle interface. Instructors can add and manage their video files inside their familiar Moodle course pages. And every live webcast and on-demand recording can be linked or embedded as a Moodle news forum, where students can watch from any laptop or mobile device.
